SOMA 20 YEARS [1991 – 2011]
Taken from H-Foundation’s debut album Environments, Tonight acquired huge success in 2002. It was remixed in 2003 by King Britt, DJ Dozia & Fred Everything, but it was King Britt’s famous Sexy Remix which soon became regarded as a classic. Soma20 Phase 7 sees DJ Sneak, Wolf + Lamb, Shonky and Gene Farris playing their part in the Soma20 celebrations. Each artist’s style shines through in these very different takes.
In the first remix DJ Sneak shows why he is regarded as King of the filtered Disco House grooves. Bumping and moving like any good Sneak record will, he toys with the vocal and strings throughout. This is classic Sneak – Straight to the front of the box.
The much hyped Wolf + Lamb remix, which featured on their recent !K7 DJ Kicks – compiled by themselves and Soul-Clap, does not disappoint. An infectious broken-beat sits below picked guitar and heavy snares. Bells, shakers and bass all join the succession, but never detract from the stripped, yet sophisticated rhythm.
Parisian producer Shonky delivers a deep and housey version of the original H-Foundation track. Soft and groove lead, his flowing remix lends a summery and laidback feel, which is perfect for the pool parties of 2011.
Gene Farris’ repertoire of musical works is impressive – productions and album gracing such labels as Defected, Cajual, his own imprint Farris Wheel and of course Soma Records where he released his This is my Religion LP. Gene steps things up a notch, with a stomping kick drum that powers through the remix. He balances this heaviness with a beautiful floating synth line, adding a spacey quality to his mix. Gene also provides a dub for those that way inclined.
