• rodhad_dystopian presents CRIMSON RUBEUS - the first compilation on the wsnwg - BACK TO ZERO label wich will be released in digital and on vinyl on the 3rd of April.

Under the leitmotif “WE SEE NEW WORLDS GROWING”, the release opens a new chapter for the label with solo releases from new artists and and long term collaborators.
The compilation features 8 tracks handpicked by rodhad, each characterized by a vigorous commitment to the dancefloor while staying true to the label’s signature - hard-to-resist sound with a pinch of mystery.
Over the past year, these unreleased tracks quickly became favourites in his DJ sets, resulting in the idea of curating them in a compilation.

• bite_records phasefatale returns with his new EP ‘Love Is Destructive’, title track out today. Preorder limited edition clear blue / red vinyl for April 19.

Marking one year since his last release, ‘Love Is Destructive’ is a clear shift into true techno territories, integrated with his distinct curation of narrative and sonic framework, imprinted with a musical diet of sleek, synthesised storytelling.The 4-Track EP reflects the turbulent ebb-and-flow found with emotional conclusion – a genesis soundtracked by raw energy and driving undercurrents. The Berlin-based DJ, Producer and Label-owner’s propensity for creating a symbiotic harmony by blending seemingly divisive elements from his genre defying repertoire, demonstrates his masterful understanding and control of the listener’s borderless, auditory journey. Exemplified by his marathon closing sets at Berghain, as well as techno arenas such as Khidi in Tbilisi (both of which he is a resident), Phase Fatale’s recent DJ performances and production endeavours reflect his fresh approach to pure techno sensibilities.

The title track sets the tone with imperative grooves, energetic vigour and intrepid attitude. Following a progression of techno propulsion in ‘Magma Driver’, infused metallic textures and trippy, headier elements add depth, whilst the body of work’s cutting edge sound design echoes spacey vivacity and purification in equal measures. Dichotomy comes forward with tracks ‘Ambivalence’ and ‘Introjection’, processed vocal samples with dub techno leanings and hints towards broken rhythms are sculpted by Payne’s focused approach, resonating a feeling of hopeful resolution akin to resurgence. These romantic sensibilities offset by cold mechanical nuances are reflected in the EP’s artwork, depicting roses against the backdrop of engine-like machinery.

Completed 632 audio projects in 2023, a new record for me,

2023 is the year i "gave the most away" (i wrote a pdf document with a bunch of free advice for sound engineers that had 10k downloads and 500k+ views). It's no coincidence that this generated a lot of new connections with the musicians around me, so it seems like it really is true that the more you give out the more you get back

That's something i'd never really done before as a freelance engineer, i just kind of sat back and let work unfold around me. What a difference it makes to take a more active role.

This has opened my eyes and made me curious what other ways i could interact with the musicians around me, providing solutions to problems they didn't know they had, offering value and access or even just trying to be more approachable.

If you reach out to your community they will reach back. This is something i've been thinking about a lot recently, how to be of value to my community of musicians around me and how to step it up to the next level.

With this new influx of customers i've been reinvesting in some select pieces of hardware this year, including a shadow hills compressor and a curve bender EQ, and next year i will be looking to upgrade to a new studio space.

Mastering is a repetitive, lonely job with long hours, sometimes also working weekends and high pressure, but somehow each year i enjoy it more, solving problems, improving, always learning, sharing ideas, thinking about sound, bringing music to the finish line, seeing videos of it being played to live audiences in massive venues and small dark spaces, I am very grateful to be doing this for a job and enjoying the role i play.

Tl/dr: the more you give away the more you get back

Customer communication should be carefully designe

Customer communication should be carefully designed to empower the musician to call the shots, and for the mastering engineer to get out of their way unless specifically requested.

The mastering engineer shouldn't impose their personality or opinions where it's not requested, and they should get a feel for if the customer needs assistance in fixing technical problems before making suggestions.

If the customer needs assistance then this is where you can dissect the mixdown and make suggestions (most helpfully on amplitude, phase and frequency) and offer mix consulting advice before mastering begins. This can be extremely helpful to tighten up issues that would stand in the way of a satisfying master.

The song represents the musicians passions, dreams, soul. You have to be careful with your words when you deal with something so personal.

Access analog: process your song using a range of analog gear (in a warehouse) in real time from the comfort of your own studio.

Perfect for demo'ing gear, or using something specific that you don't have in your own studio.

Perfect for working on the road if you want to add that analog touch from your portable setup.

Part III. Another cool feature of the TDR Kotelnikov GE Compressor is the Yin and Yang buttons which change the type of harmonics generated during compression.

Normally, a precise compressor algorithm generates purely odd-order partials.

These YIN/YANG options change the timbre naturally generated by the gain detection and reduction mechanisms, but without affecting the overall precision and values of the various
parameters.

Yin and Yang allow the compressor to generate even-ordered partials as well, whereby YIN affects the low &
low-mid content and YANG the mid & high frequency content.

The strength of the effect directly depends on the aggressiveness of compression. This means that the sonic impact can be very subtle, with slow compression settings.

Note that YIN and YANG’s effects are set up to cancel each other out over the vocal frequency range, that is,
activating both YIN and YANG does not create more harmonics than only pressing, say, YIN.

The main issue was that the bass was louder than the kick and had some mono compatibility issues, using basslane pro was a good solution for this, and master rebalance in ozone. There were resonances that made the song frustrated, and removing those allowed me to lift up the mid range quite a lot. Driving the input gain of 'the phoenix mastering plus' comp helped to bring a bit of magic and realness, as well as multiband on the high end to keep that hat in position while boosting the high end air

A: Yes, it seems to work better for me, personally.

When you have high levels of cortisol your ability to evaluate audio decreases (a lot)
